dandelionblizzard: jake and amir (amir)

Hi there! I wrote a short fic about Jake and Amir meeting for the first time. Read it HERE or under the cut.

It's Jake's second day working at CollegeHumor. The first day was mostly loading boxes from the other office into a truck, but now he's actually in the right building!

This is the first job where they actually wanted him, not just any pimply teen who'd flip burgers and hide in the back from screaming customers. He submitted some of his writing, and they picked him above maybe a hundred other candidates.

He steps out of the elevator, and admires how much everyone else got unpacked since yesterday. They even set up all the desks already, although most of them are still covered in boxes for now.

Leaning on her own desk is Sarah. She's the one who really clinched this job for him. It helps when someone who already works here recommends him (even though he totally would have gotten picked anyway).

She looks good. It's been a while since Jake's seen her in person, what with getting his apartment set up and learning the subway routes and finding which hotdog stands within a three-block radius carry a risk of food poisoning.

"Hey, Sarah," he says.

She looks up from her flip-phone. "Jake! Hi. Did you get here okay?"

"Yeah."

He actually got off at the wrong subway station and had to walk six extra blocks here, but she doesn't need to know that.

"So," he hums. "What do I do?"

A woman in a low-cut camisole runs over and grabs Sarah's shoulder. Jake grips the strap of his cross-body bag and tries not to stare.

"Sarah – the projector broke again."

"What? I just had it working."

"I know. I'm sorry."

"Sorry, Jake. I have to fix this."

"I could help," he offers, pointedly looking both of them in the eyes and nowhere else. There'll be time for that later when one of them is leant over looking for the power switch on the projector.

"No offense, but Sarah's a wiz at this," says the other woman.

"See that guy?" Sarah points over Jake's shoulder.

Jake turns around. A short-haired guy about their age is typing something on his desktop computer, and creepily staring at the three of them.

"Go introduce yourself. He'll tell you everything you need to know."

Sarah touches his shoulder, and then runs off with that woman. Jake takes a moment to savor his tingling skin, and then approaches the man. He's still staring weirdly at Jake right up until Jake is stood next to him.

"Hey, man. Sarah told me to talk to you? I'm Jake."

He nods, like he's just been told a great truth about the world. "Jake," he muses. "That's a really dope name."

Is it? Jake knew three other boys called Jacob back in Connecticut. That's why he had to start going by Jake.

"I'm Amir," he continues. "Do you have somewhere to sit?"

"I was gonna sit with Sarah. I've known her for ages," Jake points out, subtly staking his claim.

Amir runs over, nearly tripping over his own feet and grips the chair at the desk across from Sarah's.

"Well, this seat is already taken," he hisses.

"By who?" The desk is empty; nobody's even left their bag on it.

"By Hallie. She's Sarah's sister, and you'd better not talk to her because there's no way she could resist you."

Heh. Good to know.

"Okay, man. Where's a free seat?" Jake asks.

Amir smiles, showing all of his teeth. "Across from me."

"...Great."

This is going to be a long internship.
